Clair Smith’s Founder’s story: A World of Tree Experience and Passion
Clair Smith, the founder and owner of Eager Beaver Tree Service, grew up on a family farm in Owatonna Minnesota. He raised hogs, dairy, beef cattle, corn, soybeans, wheat, barley, and alfalpha. He also operated and repaired machinery. The farm was sheltered by a windbreak of over 500 trees and shrubs, which he cared for as part of a 4H club forestry project. On family vacations as a youth he witnessed various timber types and species while visiting various parts of the United States and Canada, including national forests and parks.
In 1969, as a national finalist for the Izaak Walton League summer job contest, he worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Montrose, Grand Junction, and Kremmling Colorado. He assisted the forester supervising timber sales mapping and surveying. That autumn he enrolled at the University of Minnesota, College of Forestry. The next summer he worked for the U. S. Forest Service in the Mendocino National Forest in California, where he inventoried seedling survival plots, and served on the standby fire crew. In 1971 he worked for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources near Badora State Nursery, and Elbow Lake Ranger Station, doing timber stand improvement, and winter conifer wildlife habitat improvement.
In 1975 he graduated with a degree in forest science, and the next year he again worked with the Minnesota DNR as a member of the trail crew in Wild River State Park. At the height of the Dutch Elm Disease outbreak in 1978, he worked on an elm removal crew in Minneapolis. In 1979 Claire worked on the Minnesota DNR Phase Two forest inventory crew in Finland, and Orr Minnesota, where he used aerial photographs and statistical sampling to outline timber types, ages, species volume, and site indexes.
In the mid-1980s Clair was awarded two tree planting contracts near Tofte Minnesota, and when he relocated to the state of Washington in 1986, he worked on the Washington State DNR fire crew. The next year, he volunteered in Mount Rainer National Park educating visitors on sub-alpine forest environments, and worked full-time in Olympic National Park as a naturalist teaching visitors about lowland coastal temperate rainforests.
Since returning from Washington in 1990, Claire has owned Eager Beaver Tree Service, and for the last twenty years Eager Beaver has performed top quality tree care. Clair attends conferences and seminars sponsored by universities and the tree care industry. He keeps abreast of disease and insect outbreaks, and the best management practices. His enthusiasm and passion for the health and vitality of trees allows Eager Beaver Tree Service to competently handle any tree job. You can then enjoy all the beauty, value, and serenity of the trees that grace your property.
